Merano The Alpine “Mediterranean” town in the heart of South Tyrol

"A meeting of North and South, town and country, German and Italian worlds … here, these stark contrasts smoothly merge into each other. In our part of the world, even the biggest contrasts appear friendly and familiar." To paraphrase Stefan Zweig, the 19th Century author, in his description of Merano/Meran, a town filled with gourmet delights and cultural gems in the heart of today’s South Tyrol.

Along the river bank, the art nouveau architecture leads to the medieval arcades, with small boutiques and elegant coffee shops. While downtown the palm trees, magnolias and cypresses line the pleasant walkways, snow-capped peaks glimmer in the distance. The Merano Thermal Baths serve as a reminder of the town’s past as a sophisticated spa and health resort for wealthy aristocrats. Nowadays, Merano is animated by art exhibitions, concerts and other events – all forming part of a vibrant cultural scene.

Merano is only a 10-minute drive by car from Parcines/Partschins, where the Hotel das stachelburg is located. You can also reach Merano by bicycle in just 15 minutes. Parcines and Merano are joined by bus and train with regular connections throughout the day, allowing visitors to explore the town without worrying about having to find parking.
