Meran – South Tyrol’s capital of pleasure, where Mediterranean and Alpine combine
Shopping, theatre, music, activities, culture & pleasure – Meran is always worth a visit.
Meran is South Tyrol’s capital of pleasure and culture, where Mediterranean style meets the Alpine vegetation of the surrounding area: a heady mix of palms, cypresses and blossoms in the valley with snow-covered peaks and crystal clear mountain air. Meran became famous as a spa town and it still retains elements of its sophisticated past as the sometime residence of Empress Sissi of Austria. Its mitteleuropa elegance and small-town charm is emphasised by its numerous gardens and promenades. Among these, the Passerpromenade and the Tappeinerweg are especially popular, without of course forgetting one of Italy’s most beautiful botanical gardens, the “Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle”. The porticoes of the town centre form an elegant “Shopping Mile” with bars and boutiques. History, art and culture can be experienced in the Touriseum, the Women’s Museum, the City Museum and the Kunsthaus Meran gallery. The Kurhaus, the Municipal Theatre and the Theater in der Altstadt (Old Town Theatre) all stage numerous theatrical and musical events, while the Therme Meran thermal baths with their large attached park area in the middle of the city attract sun worshippers and water lovers alike. Meran and the surrounding Burggrafenamt area can also offer plenty of activities for those seeking holiday fun on the sunny side of the Alps.
